The emergency
On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela in less than a minute.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 Mw with its epicenter near San Felipe, Yaracuy, was followed 39 seconds later by a main shock of 7.5 Mw near Yumare. The tremor was felt with extreme intensity in Caracas, Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo, and Yaracuy.
Hundreds of buildings collapsed, hospitals were damaged, and thousands of families lost their homes. La Guaira was declared a disaster zone. Rescue efforts continue as the country faces one of the gravest tragedies in its recent history.
